Chapter 35

Kalu, London

The crash team entered the room, and Kalu was ushered out by the ward sister. The door was closed unceremoniously behind him, and he was left standing in the corridor, looking through the window. He was flanked by two uniformed police officers. He watched as the doctor set up the defibrillator and prepped Damilola to be shocked. It was like watching an episode of casualty except through a window rather than on a plasma screen, and yet it was no less dramatic. Kalu felt almost completely numb, and his mind was in turmoil. Did he love this man any less than he had the day before or was the fact that his blood type was wrong enough for him to switch off his emotions and try to rationalise what had actually happened to his son. Whatever the answer was, it eluded him now.

‘It looks like his heart has stopped,’ one of the officers said. Kalu looked at him as if he was from another planet and the officer realised that what he had said was not just painfully obvious, it was verging on stupidity. ‘Sorry. That was a stupid thing to say.’

‘Sometimes, when we can’t think of the right thing to say, it’s best to say nothing at all,’ Kalu said, staring through the window as the crash team tried for a third time to defibrillate Damilola. ‘At least, that’s what I’ve found. Saying the wrong thing at the wrong time is something we’re all guilty of, I’m sure.’

‘I believe there’s some issue whether that’s actually your son?’ the second officer said. Kalu frowned but didn’t look at him. He focused on what the doctor was doing. He shocked Damilola again, but there was no response.

‘I think you have just pipped your colleague at the post,’ Kalu said, shaking his head without looking away from the traumatic scene in front of him. The policeman looked confused. ‘Congratulations, you’ve just won the most stupid line of the day award.’

Kalu looked at the police officer, who turned a shade of pink with embarrassment. ‘I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but the man in that room who has pretended to be my son and who I thought was my son has had a cardiac arrest. So, at this point, whether he is or isn’t my son is neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things.’ Kalu shrugged. ‘Even if he isn’t my son, I don’t think this is the time for me to be answering questions, however stupid they may be.’

‘I’m sorry, doctor,’ the officer said, looking sheepish. ‘But a serious crime has been committed and we’re not even sure who the victim is. It’s our job to ask questions, even if sometimes they’re difficult to answer.’

‘What I find as I’ve gone through life is a lot of things are to do with timing. Get the timing right and nobody notices as it’s just expected but get the timing wrong and everyone thinks you’re a wanker,’ Kalu said, patting the officer on the shoulder.
